Wood Casting Furniture

Wood Casting Furniture

by Hilla Shamia, Israel

Furniture
Burnt wood
Molten Aluminium
In-situ casting

When the first time I saw these furnitures I was amazed by them. I think is a beautiful peace of design, which combines two materials together: wood and metal. It looks like a peace of wood frozen in the metal. This is created by how well these two materials are joined.

Digitally-Designed Multifunctional Bench

Student-Built, Digitally-Designed Multifunctional Bench

Furniture
CNC technology cutting
Plywood sheets

I like this because it is geometric, it is not one peace, but made from many different shaped  layers. This creates a fluid form. It is also very multifunction, multi-interaction (you can sit on it, lay on it, there is no rules).

I love timber design where you can see the grain of wood. Cutting into the sections shows all the beauty of timber. The design is very artistic, looks like sculpture, but also has function.

End Grain Veneer

   End Grain Veneer

by Rohol Furniere

Vanner
Lamination

I love timber. This example is a beautiful peace of design, which shows all beauty of the grain. Wood as a material has wonderful pattern with lines, circles, dots and different shades of colours. Knots, shakes and cracks also add charm.

Blend of wood
Transparent Resin
Sanded
Varnished
Machined

I like this idea because it is resourceful and it is is using  very small amount of the expensive timber(oak, beech, maple, cherry, walnut, iroko, teak and wenge). This method is beautiful, because you can see detail of the wood. The transparent resin is very light and clear you can almost see through and allows the light to show best parts of the wood.

Brecce Lamp Collection

  Brecce Lamp Collection

     by Marco Stefanelli

Lighting
Wood

‘A lamp within a log’ is the cool idea behind Marco Stefanelli‘s gorgeous Brecce (Breaches) Collection, which debuted at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair Cascina Cuccagna show. A combination of light, wood and resin, Brecce is all handmade and mixes natural elements with LED technology.

The log lamps come in a variety of sizes and can be used as stools or simply as bookshelf lamps. The process required to realize every log lamp is quite work-intensive, requiring a section of the log to be sliced out and then for a silicone cast of the slice to be made. The light is then set in the cast.
All the components of the lamp are assembled with screws or by locking the parts together. The lamps are sometimes finished with natural wax or with linseed oil.

HygroScope – Meteorosensitive Morphology

  HygroScope – Meteorosensitive Morphology

Achim Menges in collaboration with Steffen Reichert, Centre Pomidou, Paris, 2012

Wood
Suspended
Climate-Responsiveness Architecture

The project  explores a novel model of responsive architecture based on the combination of material inherent behaviour and computational morphogenesis. The dimensional instability of wood in relation to moisture content is employed to construct a climate responsive architectural morphology. Suspended within a humidity controlled glass case of model opens and clothes in response to climate changes with no need for any technical equipment or energy. Mere fluctuations in relative humidity trigger the silent changes of material-innate movement. The material structure itself is the machine.

Up-cycling timber
Sustainability Architecture
Low cost Construction

I like this design because it is very simple, there is no expensive materials, or luxury details. Walls are made from up-cycling rustic timber. It creates simplicity, but also gives quality look. Boards on the walls gives cosy feeling that you are at home.

Some wider blocks protrude from the wall to create shelves for condiments above each table. Tabletops are made from recycled floorboards and other furniture and lampshades were sourced from local flea markets. The street signage is a solar powered recycled tool box, and the business cards are hand cut from disused cardboard packaging.
